Pioneer

Pioneers are the newest group of young explorers and future leaders of a metropolitan city! TUSI’s Pioneers are full of energy and are eager to learn about their city and the breadth of resources available to them. Up to 80 students “Pioneers” will get to traverse their for eight weeks (10 Pioneers each week). They will participate in exciting activities, go on behind the scenes exchanges of some of the city’s most well-known companies, organizations and places of interest, dine at cultural & historical eateries, engage in volunteer work, and meet influential people!

Do you think you have what it takes to become a Pioneer? Read on about the Requirements and Expectations.

Requirements

Boston is a large city and has thousands of students that would be perfect for this program.

To apply to be a TUSI Pioneer you must:

  1. Be enrolled in any school within your city's district. This includes public, pilot, parochial, Montessori, and charter schools.

  2. Be in the 5th through 8th grade level.

  3. Be willing to disclose your educational background; including enrollment, attendance, grades and discipline.

  4. Be willing to disclose your criminal background, if any.

  5. Gain the support of your teacher for the subsequent school year.

  6. Fill out an application about your personal background; including any disabilities that may affect your TUSI experience, family affluence, past summer camp and after school program experience, and any travels within and outside of your city and the USA.

  7. Sign a “Media Release” form that pertains to dialogues, photos and videos.

After TUSI’s administrative team has reviewed all applications, they will choose students to attend an informal interview and discussion. The prospective Pioneers will learn about all expectations and sign a waiver of dedication, should they be chosen to participate.

Expectations

Before all of you future Pioneers turn in your applications, it will be beneficial to know exactly what TUSI needs from you:

  1. Dedication! Once you are chosen for enrollment, you must be timely to the start destination each morning and attend each day of the Initiative.

  2. Confidence! While participating in the Initiative you could be traveling alone en route to the start destination and you must be comfortable with this.

  3. Respect! Being chosen as a TUSI Pioneer is a privilege and you must be on your best behavior. Make your fellow Pioneers, the Scholars and the city’s citizens proud by treating them with utmost respect.

  4. Responsibility! Your role as a Pioneer continues beyond your week long Initiative. Upon returning to your school, you must present your excursion to your peers by writing a paper and making a presentation. Your teacher will be there for advice and support.
